"Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2, a Great Drum Intro by Larry Mullen Jr.

My Great Web page

Larry took drum lessons from one of Ireland’s best known drummers, Joe Bonnie, in the early 70's. Larry joined a a military-style wind and percussion band, The Artane Boys Band. This played a significant part in creating Larry’s signature marching military drumming sound.

Larry Mullen's drum intro in "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is very unique, starting on the offbeat of 4, crossing over the barline (i.e., "&a1e" on the snare), then proceeding with 16th notes on the hi-hat with off beat snare hit(s), accompanied by a downbeat (four-on-the-floor) bass drum part.

Playing the "Sunday Bloody Sunday" drum intro at Cape Breton International Drum Fest in "Name that Beat" (at around :50 seconds in) to Have Fun with The Drumming Audience. Multiple members of the audience yell out "U2!":
