Buddy Rich Fills by Jeff Indyke

Dedicated to the late great Buddy Rich, master these patterns and you will stretch yourself to a new level of realizing your technique!

Section A

These 32nd note groupings switch back and forth from leading with the right hand to leading with the left. (Numbers 9 &10 start the other way.) If you have difficulty understanding the timing, relate all the groups to the standard 16th note count. (I've demonstrated this on #1.) The main idea here is to maintain the intensity of the 32nd notes, especially when leading with the left! When you are comfortable, voice the accents on the toms. Also try moving to a different drum at the beginning of each 32nd note grouping. Play the bass drum in unison with the beginning of each 32nd note grouping (and with the 16th note accents in #1 and #6). Try this interpretation on all of them. Also try playing straight quarters or 8th notes on the bass drum.

Section B

On these patterns, go for a swing feel. Listen to the solo that Buddy played on "The Midnight Cowboy Medley" from the album Keep the Customer Satisfied - That is the feel I'm talking about! That was a work of genius! First just play the exercises on a pad or snare drum, then apply the accents as rimshots. This takes a lot of concentration, so take it slow. When you are ready, try applying the accents on the toms. For the bass drum, play quarter notes, then try playing 8th notes. After that, play the bass drum in unison with each accent.

Section C

This section deals with 16th note triplets both on and off the beat. The accents can be moved on to the toms or cymbals. Also try moving to a different drum each time the accent occurs. Play the written bass drum patterns, and also try playing quarter notes and 8th notes on the bass drum.
