Part I - The famous blazing speed intro in the Van Halen song! It's at a Metronome Marking of over 250 Beats Per Minute!

Part II - The Double Bass Drum Shuffle enters, then a 3-beat phrase tom-tom pattern is repeated 6 times with the left hand. By the way, if you want to check out other double bass drum shuffles, Billy Cobham played one on Quadrant 4 in 1973 on the album Spectrum. Also, Simon Phillips played one on Space Boogie with Jeff Beck in 1980 on the album There and Back. Simon is not only playing a double bass shuffle at 256 beats per minute, but playing it in 7 - and with ghost notes!

(6) "Oye Como Va"

A recording I played on: The band leads into the solo with a synchronistic, 4 measure crescendo, then the solo begins with a melodic cowbell left hand pattern, then goes into some fast doubles mixed with accents. The Hammond Organ solo is cued with a crescendo roll with a big smack on beat 4!!

(1) Joe Morello

In Morello's Classic Book Master Studies, Joe offers an excercise to improve Timing. Start very slowly, playing each one for one bar; each measure adds more notes! One per beat!

    (2) Paradiddle-diddle

    The paradiddle-diddle is one of the 40 Percussive Art Society Rudiments. It is an extension of the Paradiddle. When we apply this rudiment to more than one surface, there are so many creative applications!

    (3) Murray Spivak - Singles, Four to Sixteen

    Murray Spivak was a leading drum teacher in L.A. With this exercise, you will develop your control & single stroke roll. Each measure you will add another stroke in the measure of 2/4. Set the tempo in the 50's and play four strokes in the first beat, then an accent on beat 2. Then try five strokes in beat one, then an accent on beat 2. Then 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 in the first beat, then the accent on beat 2!

    (4) Jim Chapin Hand Exercise (Mixed Stickings)

    Here's one of Jim's exercises that you should eventually apply the Moeller system to. The Moeller system is a must to correctly play Jim's revolutionary book Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer. Also, the melodic exercises in this book are based on particular songs!

    (5) Flam Facility

    Here's a series of exercises from Dom Famularo's book Its Your Move, the book that finally put the most effective hand techniques into explanatory text and pictures. This particular exercise is a rhythmical pyramid of flams!

    (6) Flams on Top & Inside

    Triplets, 16ths and Quintuplets with Flams in the Front for one measure, then inside for the ensuing measure!!

    (7) Right Hand Flams

    A measure of 16ths, then a measure of Quints with Right Hand Flams while the Left continuously vamps

    (8) Quintuplet Successions

    Here are single stroke groupings of 5:  Quintuplets. The accent hand will change each beat since we are dealing with odd groupings.

    (9) Two's Meet Quints and Septs!

    (10) Nonuplet Successions

    Here are single stroke groupings of 9:  Nonuplets. Once again, the accent hand will change each beat since we are dealing with odd groupings, but the switch will take place a little later than in the 7's!
